We can now build, push, and start the service:

adb push "$ANDROID_PRODUCT_OUT/system/bin/birthday_server" /data/local/tmp
adb root
adb shell /data/local/tmp/birthday_server

In another terminal, check that the service runs:

adb shell service check birthdayservice

You can also call the service with service call:
